Radiotherapy planning scans reveal breast cancer patients' CVD risk
Key clinical point: Breast cancer patients’ cardiovascular disease risk can be estimated from coronary artery calcium detected on routine radiotherapy planning scans.
Major finding: At a median follow-up of 51.6 months, the incidence of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular disease events increased with baseline coronary artery calcium score, from 5.1% in women with a score of 0 to 28.0% in women with a score exceeding 400 (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.7).
Study details: A retrospective study of 15,919 women who had radiotherapy planning CT scans during 2004-2016.
Disclosures: The study was supported by the Dutch Cancer Society, the European Commission, the Dutch Digestive Foundation, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, and Elekta. The presenter disclosed no conflicts of interest.
