Key clinical point: Breast cancer patients’ cardiovascular disease risk can be estimated from coronary artery calcium detected on routine radiotherapy planning scans.

Major finding: At a median follow-up of 51.6 months, the incidence of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular disease events increased with baseline coronary artery calcium score, from 5.1% in women with a score of 0 to 28.0% in women with a score exceeding 400 (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.7).

Study details: A retrospective study of 15,919 women who had radiotherapy planning CT scans during 2004-2016.
