Increased hypothyroidism risk seen in young men with HS

Key clinical point: Be on the lookout for hypothyroidism in younger men with hidradenitis suppurativa.

Major finding: Men younger than 40 years with hidradenitis suppurativa are at nearly a fourfold increased risk for comorbid hypothyroidism; similarly aged women with the dermatologic disease are not at elevated risk.

Study details: This retrospective case-control study included more than 700 patients with hidradenitis suppurativa matched by age and sex to a large population of dermatology patients without the disorder.
