Microplastics permeate human placentas

Key clinical point: Microplastic particles penetrated all levels of the placenta, including the fetal side, maternal side, and chorioamniotic membranes.

Major finding: A total of 12 microplastic fragments ranging from 5 to 10 mcm in size were identified in four placentas.

Study details: The data come from a pilot observational preclinical study of six women who consented to donate placentas after delivery.
